Once a lyophilized research peptide is placed into solution, the handling requirements change. This page covers general laboratory practice for peptides in solution and deliberately contains no administration or dosing information of any kind.
Solution stability is shorter than powder stability
Peptides in solution are more exposed to hydrolysis, oxidation and adsorption to container surfaces than the same material as dry powder. Working stocks are therefore usually prepared in the smallest practical volume and kept for the shortest practical period, with the preparation date recorded against the lot number.
Aliquot to limit freeze-thaw cycles
Repeatedly freezing and thawing a single vial subjects the whole stock to every cycle. Splitting a prepared stock into single-use aliquots means each experiment draws on material that has been through one cycle rather than many, which removes a source of variance that is otherwise invisible in the results.
Light, containers and labelling
Protect solutions from light, choose containers appropriate to the compound, and label every aliquot with compound, lot number, preparation date and concentration. An aliquot that cannot be traced back to a documented lot cannot be tied to a certificate later.
