"Third-party tested" is one of the most repeated phrases in this market and one of the least examined. A certificate is a specific technical document with specific limits.

The Two Core Questions

Identity: is this the right molecule? Answered by mass spectrometry, comparing the observed mass against the theoretical mass for the sequence. This is the test that catches the wrong compound entirely, and it is the one most often missing from thin certificates.

Purity: how much of the sample is the target molecule? Answered by reversed-phase HPLC, reported as the target peak's percentage of total peak area. Deletion sequences, truncations, and oxidized variants show as separate peaks.

Missing lot numbers or missing chromatograms are the two most informative red flags, because both make the certificate unverifiable.

What a COA Does Not Tell You

  • Net peptide content. Purity is a ratio; content is a mass. See our purity versus net content article.
  • Sterility or endotoxin, unless specifically tested and stated.
  • Residual solvents or heavy metals, unless specifically tested.
  • Stability over time. The result describes the test date, not the vial in your freezer six months later.
  • Anything about safety or human suitability. That is outside the scope of chemical analysis entirely.

Third-Party Versus In-House

In-house testing can be technically excellent, but it lacks independence. Third-party analysis puts the measurement in the hands of a laboratory with no commercial interest in the result. The meaningful check is whether the certificate names the independent laboratory and whether the lot number on the certificate matches the vial.

Reading the Chromatogram

A number can be typed; a chromatogram is harder to fake convincingly. Look for a clean baseline, a well-resolved main peak, and visible minor peaks rather than an implausibly empty trace. A gradient that is too fast can compress impurities under the main peak and inflate the reported purity — which is why the method description matters.

Practical Verification Steps

  1. Match the lot number on the vial to the lot number on the certificate.
  2. Check the test date is recent relative to your receipt date.
  3. Confirm both identity and purity tests are present.
  4. Confirm the testing laboratory is named.
  5. Look at the chromatogram, not just the headline percentage.
