What Is a Certificate of Analysis for a Research Peptide?

A certificate of analysis (COA) is a lot-specific document reporting which tests were run on a defined batch of material, by which methods, against which specifications, and with what results. It is a record, not a guarantee, and it only covers the lot named on it. A COA for a different batch of the same compound says nothing about the vial in front of you.

Fields That Give a COA Meaning

Product name and lot number. These identify what was tested. Without a lot number, no traceability is possible.

The important structural point is that these are separate questions. A high purity figure does not imply sterility. A sterility result does not imply low endotoxin. Endotoxin testing says nothing about molecular identity.

What a COA Does Not Establish

A COA does not certify that a compound is safe, effective, or appropriate for any use. It does not extend to future stability beyond whatever data support a stated retest date. It does not cover attributes that were not tested — silence on a field means the test is absent, not that the result was favorable.

Nor does a COA authenticate itself. Documents can be reproduced, edited, or attached to the wrong lot. Verification through the issuing laboratory, when possible, is the only step that closes that gap.

What the Evidence Can—and Cannot—Tell Us

Analytical chemistry provides real, checkable facts about a material: a retention time, a measured mass, a titration result. What it cannot provide is biological meaning. A perfectly documented lot of an unapproved compound remains an unapproved compound with whatever thin evidence base the literature contains. Quality documentation raises confidence in what the material is, not in what it does.

Undocumented material is the most common silent source of irreproducible peptide data. If two laboratories run the same protocol with lots differing in net peptide content, they are running different experiments while believing they are running the same one. Recording lot numbers alongside results, retaining the COA, and checking that specifications actually match the intended application converts a shipment into a documented experimental input.
